September’s Embrace & Engage Challenge

What are you putting off?
I am willing to bet each one of us is putting off some medical test or procedure.

  • the mammogram?
  • the colonoscopy?
  • the annual exam and pap smear?
  • having your cholesterol checked?
  • having that “funny spot” on your skin checked?

For me, it is the mammogram. I’ve had them in the past, and should have scheduled one earlier this year, but I just haven’t gotten around to it. I know I should schedule it, but it’s not exactly my idea of fun, so I haven’t.

The fear of embarrassment, pain, or even getting bad news can prevent us from doing the things we need to take care of ourselves. I put off the colonoscopy as long as I could – surely it wouldn’t be pleasant.

Yet, when I finally got the guts to do it (which you should interpret as my husband forced me to do it since my Father passed away at age 52 from colon cancer – really I didn’t have an excuse) it wasn’t awful at all. The drugs they give you are tremendous – I don’t remember a thing!

So, to start the ball rolling, I commit publicly to schedule my mammogram today and challenge you to commit to scheduling the test you’ve been avoiding. It will be our Embrace & Engage Challenge for the month! Visit the Embrace & Engage Challenge page to accept the challenge and see who else will join you.

Have the courage to do something great for your health!
